Accept The Commitment
A dog is a living being, with needs and feelings. Before you start looking at all those cute furry faces, make sure you are ready to commit to taking good care of Fido for the rest of his life.
Spend Time With Fido
Before you bring your new pup home, spend some one-on-one time with him. You’re making a big decision, so you want to be sure you’re choosing the pet that is right for you and your household.
Be Prepared
Fido will need bedding, toys, treats, a collar and leash, grooming supplies, and a crate. If you know what type of food your dog has been eating, get that for now, and consult your vet before making changes. You’ll also want to make sure that your fencing is sturdy and secure.
Puppyproof
Do some puppyproofing: remove or secure dangerous items, such as toxic plants; plastic bags; chemicals; medicine; and small or sharp objects. Ask your vet for specific recommendations.
The Big Day
When you pick Fido up, take him for a walk before bringing him inside. This will help him burn off any excess energy, so he’ll be calmer.
Accommodations
Keeping Fido in a quiet room at first, with all of his toys and treats. This will give your canine pal a safe, comfy place where he can relax and settle in.
Welcome Home
Throw your pup a welcome party. Fido can enjoy a yummy treat, and some fun new toys. Don’t forget to take pictures!
Veterinary Care
Contact your vet to schedule an exam, and any other veterinary care your new furkid needs. At your appointment, ask for specific advice on Fido’s diet, exercise, and care needs.
Settling In
Don’t be surprised if your furry friend spends a lot of time napping at first. Being in a shelter can be very stressful! Just give Fido the time and space he needs to get used to his new home. You’ll have that tail wagging in no time!
